Back in the Saddle

My nephew is coming to visit this weekend, so I won’t be playing at all.  I logged in last night hoping to fill an alternate spot for the guild’s Kara run, but everyone showed up.  So, I was left wondering what to do.

You’ve probably sensed a bit of lethargy lately – and you’re not wrong.  Part of it is summer chores and fun.  But the other part was just going through a bit of ennui.  Honestly, I think all this Badge of Tenacity grinding and obsessing was getting me down.  So last night I officially gave it up.  If I see it on the AH for a decent price (1500G last night, still too expensive), I’ll grab it, otherwise – time to move on.

So what to do?

I read this article a while back on WoW Insider that made me feel pretty good about running Kara.  They list target stats for Bear and Cat and I was right on the money, even a bit above, on most stats (fyi – also lists recommended stats for Balance and Resto and other classes).  The only real trouble spot was a lower than recommended attack power rating for cat.  Then, I went to our guild website to register for the Kara run and they are requiring Defense of at least 492 for Bear tanks.  I haven’t talked to an officer yet to see how set in stone that is, but I did a little research on how to raise my defense.

I may write up a Defense-oriented post early next week, but based on the little poking around I did it seemed the quickest thing I could do right away was get back to working on my Scryer’s rep to get the +defense shoulder enchant.  Most of the good Scryer stuff starts at Revered.  Well, I’m still languishing back at Friendly, but I only needed around 1500 rep to make Honored.  So I started grinding away at Firewing Point in Terokkar.

It actually wasn’t that bad, and having a purpose and a plan made it better.  Plus, with most of the mobs around level 64 or so, I was cutting through them like butter in cat form.  Seriously, some of the casters went down so fast that even taking time to loot them, my Prowl cooldown wasn’t up yet!  Got a couple greens, nothing crazy.  In about 90 minutes I had 50 or so signets and called it a night.  So one more quick grinding session and I’ll be at Honored.  Here’s the faction rep guide at wowhead in case you’re insterested.  There was just one other grinder, a hordie, in the area and two Adamantitie nodes in the area, so I got some ore out of it also (one node just to the right of the entrance gate, and the other node was on the NW side of camp).

So a quick little session that was a lot of fun.  I’m looking forward to playing again, but I guess I’ll have to wait until next week to get into Kara.

On another side note – I’m working on a completely new section of the blog.  Since I’ve been doing some research on how to raise stats in other ways besides gear, I figured that maybe others might be interested also.  So I’m trying to pull it all together in a coherent way, while letting you get at the data from different perspectives.  If I get some time to work on it over the next week, it might be ready to go by end of next week.

I probably won’t be posting for a while given visiting family, then the holiday.  Have fun and play safe!

  1. Be sure that your guild is aware that a defense rating of 492 is silly for bear tanks who have three talent points in Survival of the Fittest. If you’ve got three points in SOTF, you only need a defense rating of 415. Once you’re at 415, you’re uncritable in bear form, thanks to the SOTF multiplier.

415 is relatively easy to get with the Heavy Clefthoof set using the appropriate gems, a styling purple hat, a few enchants, the starter Kara ring, and a trinket. I got the ring by grinding the beast boss mobs in the basement, haven’t done Attumen yet.

Check out my armory profile for a decent pre-kara tanking set.

  2. I hear you on this back to the saddle stuff. I am getting so frustrated with my druid because I tried a setup that was feral to the point of just using bear 28 points worth… and dropped the last 31 into resto so I could get
the full 10% crit reduction. So far as I can say it isn’t
worth it. I am gonna switch back… get enough points in there for OoC and then drop it all in feral. I played moonkin for a bit, resto for a bit, etc… I easily spent a good fortune in respec testing out differnet settings.
All this to find out that unless I spend at least 41 points into a tree I will be frustrated with my pve/pvp experience. And really unless I have spent a great sum of my points into resto then it is pointless for me to do anything other than supplemental healing during an instance.

  3. I guess what I enjoy most about being a druid is being a kitty/bear… So I am curious then… when you mention raising stats away from gear… are you talking temporary buffs or more in the line of talents?

I read that post a little too.. surprised that Websense hasn’t picked it up yet.

    * Feral (bear)
415 defense and Survival of the Fittest talent
    20,000 armor
    12,000 health
    20% dodge
    1,000 attack power
    20% crit

    * Feral (cat)
    2,000 attack power
    23% +crit
    6,500 health

  4. I probably shouldn’t tell you this, because once every one else figures it out it will destroy a massive farming opportunity, but the Shartuul event is repeatable once you are honored with Ogrila, and has a guaranteed depleted drop, therefore giving you a 1/10 or so chance of getting the badge.

  5. also, your guild leader is a dumbass if they want 492 defense for a bear tank.

If you have 3/3 survival of the fittest, Bears are uncrittable at 415 defense. Any defense above 415 is mostly wasted item budget, which is better spent on agility for increased dodge, or increased stamina.

  6. Grinal – two good points. I did just figure out the SotF effect on crits and I will point that out to guild leader.

Also – I did know about the event generating a “depleted” item. It’s been documented on the Druid wiki for a while (http://druid.wikispaces.com/Badge_of_Tenacity). Best part is, first time you complete the quest you’re guaranteed a depleted item, after that they say it’s around a 19% drop. I guess I was trying to get a sense of how difficult the quests were – comments around the web seemed to indicate they were pretty difficult and sometimes I have trouble rounding up guildies to help out. So I probably won’t be able to get this on farm mode anytime soon. Plus, you’re not guaranteed a depleted badge – just a depleted “item”.

Can you share the relative difficulty of the quests and best way to approach them?

  7. This may warrant it’s own “Cliff Notes” post, but the comments tab on the wowhead Ogri’la faction page has a great walkthrough of the entire rep and quest chains for this mini-faction:

  8. …and Eyesis, I’m talking about everything that isn’t gear and isn’t talents: permanent and temporary enchantments, gems, food, potions, etc. Can’t find a decent summary of all so I’m building one myself.

  9. I guess the 492 number looks cool.. :/

I have thought about that… but I need to get my rep up on the quest line to be in line for repeating that quest. Once I do I will be guild farming for my depleted badge.

Nice find there Grinal.. I did see the drop rate.. but I hadn’t got far enough on the quest line to discover this.
Thanks for putting me in the right direction.

  10. Are you sure the 19% drop isn’t the drop chance of a Darkrune inside Kronk’s Bag (or whatever it’s called)?

As for the Shartuul event, maybe I’m hopelessly coordinated, but it’s incredibly difficult. I’m a long way off completing it, and with a darkrune only dropping about once or twice a week, I’m trying to build a up a supply of them before trying the event 3-4 times in a row one day to improve my chances.

The nice thing about doing the Daily Quests in this area is that once you get exalted with Shatari Skyguard, you get a lovely thing called the Shatari Silver Cross.

  11. Silver Cross isn’t what I thought it would be. It’s decent, but the fact that it has a 30% chance really bugs me, not to mention it’s completely worthless for boss fights. It has a few more crit than Bladefist’s, but I personally much prefer an extra 200ap use effect whenever it’s up.
As for the Shartuul event, I’m not having fun with it. I’ve gotten to the assassin a bunch of times, but today I died before even beating the felguard… the imps literally resisted every single one of my charges and they just slowly tapped my life down. Pretty sad. Waiting for a Darkrune really sucks too, I almost always get 10 shards or a depleted crystal. Just takes time, and I’m impatient. lol

  12. Amanna,

As was mentioned before, your guild leader needs a little education about druids and becoming un-crittable. Due to our Survival of the Fittest talent we only need 415 Defense to become uncrittable by a level 73 mob. Level 72 is 410 defense so think about that when you are running regular instances. Getting 490 defense is all but impossible with the itemization that druids have and you woul dhave to sacrifice almost every other stat just to get there. I suspect your guild leader was just misinformed or has a grude against druids.

Second, the numbers in the post from wowinsider are pretty good general tanking numbers but there is no dire need to have a specific amount of AP or Crit, granted it keeps your threat generation up and build rage (when talented), you should concentrate on your armor and hp first and let the crit and AP come in with the AGI that you add for dodge.

Right now my numbers sit around the following:
    25.5% dodge
    27400 armor
    13,300 hp

and im not sure on crit or ap but I tank regular instances like butter and heroics all the time.

  13. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I don’t think my guild leader has it in for Druids, probably just needs a little educating. If that doesn’t work, then a big hairy paw upside the head…

On the Kara numbers from the wowinsider post – I do realize they are just guidelines. From reading the comments to the post, most readers indicated they were solid stats for the first three bosses or so, but would need additional buffing for the harder bosses. I haven’t gotten in yet, so I really can’t comment.

My armor in bear is a little low at around 21,000; same with health at 12,500. Of course, that’s unbuffed so once buffed up in the raid, I think I’d be okay.

Vacation next week, so probably little time to get on a run, but hopefully soon.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

  14. Nothing going on worth mentioning. I’ve just been letting everything happen without me these days. Today was a total loss. Not much on my mind recently.,
